These sculptures are crafted from salvaged industrial materials, military surplus fabrics and vintage photographic equipment. They are re-purposed from former use and service to become part of this series of surveying and recording devices. The exact functions are elusive and the fabric skins seem to conceal a vital paradox between the mechanical and organic forms.

Over the past 10 years Howie has explored and documented numerous formerly used defense sites throughout the United States and Abroad. His work is deeply influenced by the mark they have left on our culture and landscape.
